僕がある日釣りを始めたわけ

島牧村は知る人ぞ知る釣りのメッカ。

だから、ここに移住したんでしょ？と思われるかもしれませんが、僕が島牧に移住したのは2016年。

釣りを始めたのは実は2020年なのです。

そもそも釣りなんて中学生時代にバス釣りをした以来竿も握ったこともなく、金がかかる趣味を増やす気は全くありませんでした。

そんな僕がなぜ釣りにこんなにもハマってしまったのでしょうか。

コロナで食糧危機！？「なければ自給すればいい」の精神

2020年、新型コロナウイルス感染が広がり、4月よりリモートワークになったこともあって、都会と田舎の2拠点暮らしをしていた我が家は田舎・島牧村にある方の家を中心に暮らすことにしました。

島牧村の自宅からは海は徒歩3分。
これまで子どもたちと水遊びや砂遊びに興じたことあっても釣りには手を出すことはありませんでした。

こんなに海が近くにありながら、釣り人たちのメッカであることも知りながらなぜ今まで僕は釣りをしてこなかったのか。

お金がかかる趣味だと思っていたから？

子どもたちが幼く自分の時間が取れなかったから？

色々と言い訳はあるのですが、釣りをしてみようと思ったきっかけはコロナ禍です。

コロナ感染が広がる中、経済危機に加え食糧危機の懸念まで湧き上がってきました。
これは何か対策を立てなければ思い、かつて我が家が経済危機にあったときに行った行動を振り返ったのでした。


当時は、
「現金収入がなくても、食うものがあればまずは安心できる」
と言って畑を始めました。

さらに
「主食がなくては安心できない」
と言って田んぼも始めました。

あの時の経験から、
「とりあえず食いつなげれば生きていける」
ことを知っていました。

野菜は作り方も知っているし、周りも畑をやっているからなんとかなるだろう。
でもタンパク質はどうしよう。あ、目の前（海）にいるじゃん！

という思考の流れです。

今のうちにある程度の道具を揃えておきさえすれば、タンパク質の自給が可能になる。

「パンがなければお菓子を食べればいいじゃない」

というマリー・アントワネットの有名な言葉がありますが、

「タンパク質がなければ自給すればいいじゃない」

の精神で釣りを始めたのでした。

釣りって、始めてみるとこんなに面白いものだってことに気づかされました。

特に島牧は場所がいいのか、どこへいっても大抵何かしらの魚は見えますし、釣れます。


最初は師匠も何もなく、全くやり方がわからないところから試行錯誤しながら釣りをしていました。
何度も失敗し、ルアーや仕掛けをいくつもダメにして覚えました。
近くにいた釣り人にもたくさん尋ねました。


最初釣ったのはホッケでした。
親切なおっちゃんたちに教えてもらいながら、ホッケを20匹以上釣りました。
釣った魚は食べれるし、魚がエサを喰った時のブルブルという感覚はやみつきになります。
パチンカーならわかると思いますが、大当たりがきた時と同じようなアドレナリンが出ます。

「キタキタキター！」

という感覚です。
もちろん目の前でバラされてしまうこともあるので、高確率リーチで外れた感覚も一緒です。
僕は結婚を機にパチンコからは足を洗いましたが、ほんとあの時の射幸性が甦ってきたかのよう。

そう、基本楽しいんですよ、釣りは。
わざわざ札幌や室蘭あたりから島牧まで釣りに来る人たちの気持ちが少しはわかります。

親父は現役のパチンカーなので釣りにチェンジするようオススメしていますが、一緒に行ったりしないとこの楽しさは伝わらないのでダメでしょうね。
今後は釣りで親父の更生を目指します。


食育としての釣り

いくら釣りにハマったからと言っても、休日に1人の時間なんてそうそうあるわけもなく、「遊ぼう、遊ぼう」と行ってくる子どもたちとの時間も大切です。

そこで僕は思いつきました。
「子どもたちを連れて釣りしよう」と。
子どもたちもすぐ近くの海でよく遊びます。
子どもたちの安全に配慮しながら竿を振ろうと。


しかし、何かやっていると子どもたちは目敏いんですね。

「何それ、やりたい！」
となるわけです。
そこで、子どもたちも楽しめるよう、海岸ではなく、港へ行きました。
この辺の海は透明度が高いので、魚影が見えます。
海に落ちないかドキドキしながらも、その魚影に向かって合わせる方法でやらせてみました。
すると、ソイやらサバやらイワシやら見事に釣り上げるのです。

そして、一緒に釣った魚を持ち帰って捌いて食卓に。
「ぼく（わたし）がつったさかなだよ」
と嬉しそうに食べる子どもたち。

魚は海から獲ってくるものであること、生きていること、食とは何かをしっかりと体感して考えてくれたように思います。

釣りを始めて自分も楽しいし、ご飯のおかずにもなるし、子どもたちの食育にもなる。

これこそ、一石二鳥どころか一石三鳥！
