そこで、「本当に必要なマーケティングとは何か」についてあれこれ考えてみました。
マーケティングとは、「顧客、依頼人、パートナー、社会全体にとって価値のある提供物を創造・伝達・配達・交換するための活動であり、一連の制度、そしてプロセスである」とマーケティング発祥の地であるアメリカマーケティング協会では定義されています。この定義も実は20年おきくらいに変わっていて、現在は５度目の改定版定義なのです。
ここでわかったのは、マーケティングの定義は時代によって変わっていくものなのだということ。今あるマーケティングの手法やフレームワークなどは、どんどん時代遅れになっていく可能性が高く、新しい手法やフレームワークが次々に発表されるのだと思います。その代表例がプロダクトポートフォリオマネジメント（PPM）です。PPMの限界を補うフレームワークとして米大手企業のGEでビジネススクリーンが開発され、多くの人に認知されています。
マーケターとして、このようなフレームワークや手法を知識として持っていることは必要なことだし、財産だと考えています。しかし、そこにとらわれてしまうとお客さんには届かないものだなとも感じているのです。
「マーケティングについて教えてほしい」と言われた時、以前まではどのような考え方で市場を分析するか、商品開発を行うのかというような説明を一生懸命していました。けれども、ほとんど伝わっていなかったように思います。その原因は、マーケティング用語が難しそうだから。前述したプロダクトポートフォリオマネジメントにしろ、ビジネススクリーンにしろ、4P、３C、SWOT分析、PEST分析などなど、カタカナ用語が多すぎて、興味ない人にとってはチンプンカンプンだったのではないでしょうか。今思い返すと、ただただ自分の知識をひけらかしていたようで恥ずかしくなってしまいます。
今年、ある農家さんと話をしていて気づいたのは、マーケティングの手法だとかフレームワークなどというものはそこまで重要ではないのだということ。彼らが知りたいのはマーケティングの手法や考え方なのではなくて、商品をどのように販売するか、どのように伝えるかというコミュニケーション手法なのです。そのことに気づけたことは非常に大きいと思っています。マーケティングは手段であって目的ではない。よって、マーケティングついてクライアントは理解する必要はなく、何が必要でどうすれば良いかをわかりやすく説明できることがマーケターとしての能力なのだと。
正直に言わせて欲しいのですが、僕が提案するマーケティングの価格は決して高くはないと思っています。リサーチして、集計して、分析して、それをベースに戦略に落とし込み、レポートを作ってプレゼンする。そこまでやって、20万円程度で見積もりを出していました（※リサーチ量やレポート内容によって変わります）。代理店などにお願いするときっとこれの何倍もかかることでしょう。しかし、見積もりを出すと一気に相手がトーンダウンしてくるのを感じます。声に出さなくても雰囲気で言いたいことが伝わるのです。
それは、「思ってたより高い」です。
これは僕自身の信頼が不足しているという不徳の致すところでもあるのですが、想定しているであろう数万円程度でやれることは非常に限られています。マーケティングはある意味専門性が高い分野ですし、勉強も経験も必要です。さらに、リサーチ、集計、分析、戦略立案、資料作成を行うためにはかなりの時間が必要になります。数時間でちゃちゃっとやれることではないのです。それでも高いと思われてしまうところに課題があるなと感じ、その課題にしっかりと向き合ってみるとあることに気がつきました。
孫子の兵法に「敵を知り己を知れば百戦危うからず」という有名な言葉があります。クライアントにとって知るべき対象は同業他社であると定義付けできるのでしょうが、もう一つの視点が必要であることにある農家さんの相談を聞いて気付かされました。マーケターである自分にとって知るべき対象とはクライアントではないか、と。彼は何がしたくて、何を期待して「マーケティングしたい」と言っているのか。また、どんな能力があって、何が得意で何が苦手で、本質的には何に困っているのか。ウォンツではなくニーズをしっかりと把握しないと、彼のいう「マーケティング」のニーズが見えてこないのです。
彼自身、ああしたいこうしたいと、やりたいことを口にするのですが、その場にいたスタッフにも感想をヒアリングすると「言っていることがあちらこちらに飛んでいて一貫性がない」とどうも懐疑的だったのが印象的でした。それはなぜか、どうしてスタッフに伝わらないのかということを突き詰めていくと、どうも彼自身ビジョンはあるのだが、点としてでしかなく、点と点がつながっていないのではないかという仮説が持ち上がりました。
彼の中にはどうやら答えがある気がする。その点と点をつなげさえすれば、彼の望むマーケティング問題は解決するのではないかと考え、「頭の中を見える化します」ということを提案しました。これは、ヒアリングをして、整理して、それを１枚の資料にまとめるだけ。これなら予算の数万円でお手伝いできます。その提案を受けてくれたので、日時を決めて「頭の中の見える化」を行いました。
「頭の中の見える化」を行うためにヒアリングした結果、彼は非常にスッキリとした表情で、「カウンセリングみたいだね」と言いました。事業戦略とかマーケティングなどはコンサルティングだと思っていたので、この言葉は僕にとって非常に衝撃的でした。
かねてから僕がマーケティングに持っていた疑問として、
というものがありました。特に３つ目の「偉そう」というのが一番嫌だったかも知れません。自分自身、人から上から指図されたり、偉そうに振る舞われることが苦手だからです。だからこそ自分自身はそうなりたくないなと思っていました。
マーケティングは確かに専門知識で、僕自身知らない人に手ほどきすることはできます。しかし、「この方法があなたにとって最適です」と言えるだけの絶対的な自信もないですし、思う通りに人を動かすことができるだけのカリスマ性もありません。そもそも人にこうしたほうがいいと言われて素直に実行できる人がどのくらいいるのでしょうか。きっと僕にはできないことです。いくら素晴らしい戦略戦術を提案したところで、実行してもらえなければ水泡に帰すだけ。それでは幾ら何でも虚しすぎます。
では、どうしたら行動につなげられるのでしょうか。自分自身がしたいと思うこと、自分で決めたことであれば、人に言われたことよりもモチベーションは高いはずだと考えました。答えは自分の中にあるはずで、それを引き出すために頭の中を整理し、見える化することで客観視できたら行動しやすくなるのではないか、と。それぞれがイメージとして持っているマーケティングを実践するにあたって、マーケティングに必要な答えを自身の中から引き出して整理することをお手伝いしていければ、もっともっと気軽にマーケティングを活用して課題解決ができる。そんなカウンセリングを通して、本当に良いものを作っている生産者さんたちや、素晴らしい考え・発想を持っている人たちをサポートしていきたいと考えています。
