妻が当麻町というところでイベント仕事をしてまして、この日帰ってくる予定でした。
電車使って帰るかもという話を聞いていたので、
「何時頃の予定？」
なんてやりとりを子どもたちと一緒に幼稚園に居ながらLINEでしていました。
どこか近くの駅まで迎えにきて欲しいなんて言われていたのですが、
「当麻、旭川方面か」
なんとなーく普段目にしない風景が浮かんできたんですよね。
普段よく行くのはつがいの家がある後志・島牧方面。
距離も同じくらいではあるのだけれど、景色は全く違うはず。
数年前に旭川へ行った時の高速道路から見る景色がぼんやりイメージされました。
「当麻まで迎えに行くのもありかもしれない」
時計の針はもう14時を過ぎていました。
当麻では今夜妻が参加したイベントの打ち上げが行われるとか。
僕は知っている人なんて全然いないし、別にそこに興味はありませんでした。
初めて会う人と絡むのも面倒だなくらいに思っていました。
でもなんとなくイケイケとアラートが鳴っていたので、子どもたちにも確認。
「これから当麻行かない？」
「うーん」
子どもたちの返事もそれほど芳しいものではなく、どっちでも良さそうな迷っていそうな感じ。
「あ、旭山動物園近いかも」
「いく！」
即答でした。
旭山動物園は僕も行ってみたかったので、ちょうどいいかなと思っていました。
なんだかいつもと違うことをしてみたい気分だったのです。
そして僕は幼稚園から一度家に帰り、特急で泊まり支度をして再度車に乗り込みました。
さあ、子どもたちを連れて200kmの旅に出発だ！
道のりは高速を使って約2時間半。
ところが途中カフェにいる妻を拾いに行ったりして結局3時間。
到着する頃には時刻は19時を過ぎていました。
到着するや否や、みんなでワラワラとペットボトルロケット。
な、なんだいきなりこれは。でも子どもたちは楽しいよね、こういうの。
よく見ると小学生くらいの子どもたちが結構な人数いました。
本日の打ち上げに飛び入り参加させてもらうことへの謝礼含め、差し入れとして先日釣り上げた特大ヒラメを持参しました。
昆布締めにしたものの、かなりの量だったので家族だけでは食い切れないとちょうど思っていたのでした。

今回集まった当麻の方々の多くは移住組で、中でもここ数年で入ってきたばかりという変わり者ばかり。
自分は常識人だから、変わり者たちとはそれほど盛り上がるまいと考えていたのが間違いでした。
僕自身も実は変わり者だったのです。
常識人だと思っていたこと自体が間違いだったのか、でも楽しいからまあいいや。行く前に想像していたのとは打って変わって、本当にたくさんの人たちと仲良くなったのでした。
当麻と島牧は直線距離でも300km超え、高速を使っても4時間半（ノンストップで）はかかります。
それでも「今度島牧に行くよ」「また当麻に来るよ」と約束し合うように。
つがい的旅の醍醐味とは、人と人との関係性だと考えています。
いわゆる観光地巡りも悪くありませんが、もう一度行くモチベーションにはなりづらいんですよね。
この人にまた会いたいから行く。
次に何かする約束をしたから行く。
結局は人と人なのです。
訪れた場所で素敵なコミュニティに出会えたらもう最高ですね。
コミュニティとコミュニティが繋がったら、もう楽しいことが始まるイメージしかありません。
結局翌日には早速友人宅を訪れ、いっぱいしゃべって一緒にご飯食べて、まるで数年来の友人と時を過ごしたかのようでした。

ちなみに、ものすごく疲れていたけれど子どもたちとの約束でしたから旭山動物園にはいきました。
これも行ってよかった。
